A visible-light induced redox-neutral decarboxylative cross coupling reaction of indole-3-acetic acid NHPI (N-hydroxyphthalimide) esters I [R = H, Br, OMe; R1 = H, (4-chlorophenyl)carbonyl] with indoles e.g., 1H-indole using a Ru photosensitizer to deliver a wide range of sym. and unsym. 3,3′-bisindolylmethane derivatives II [R2 = 3-methyl-1H-indol-2-yl, 6-bromo-5-fluoro-1H-indol-3-yl, 5-([2-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy)acetyl]oxy)-1H-indol-3-yl, etc.] have been reported.
