I with PCl5 and POCl3 gave nitro-2-chlorobenzothiazole (II), yellow needles, m. 190-1°. 2-Amino-6-nitrobenzothiazole, yellow needles, m. 245°, was prepared from p-nitroaniline, (NH4)2SCN, and Br, diazotized and decomposed to 2-chloro-6-nitrobenzothiazole, yellow needles, m. 189-90°, identical with II; it can be concluded that I was 2-mercapto-6-nitrobenzothiazole. II can also be obtained by the nitration of 2-chlorobenzothiazole.
