Cations 2 and 3 are analogues of the cluster cation [H3Ru 3(C6H6)(C6Me6) 2(O)]+ which was found to catalyse the hydrogenation of benzene to give cyclohexane under biphasic conditions (‘supramolecular cluster catalysis’). The single-crystal X-ray structure analyses of 2 and 3 have been determined. Unlike [2][BF4]·3H2O, [3][PF 6]·H2O shows a dimeric structure in the solid state, thanks to hydrogen bonds between the hydroxo function of one molecule of 3, a water molecule and the oxo cap of an other molecule of 3.

We demonstrated a novel approach to produce robust bicontinuous nanoporous polymer membranes by ring-opening metathesis polymerization of a new norbornene-functional diblock copolymer and dicyclopentadiene followed by selective removal of a chemically etchable polylactide block. Polymerization-induced phase separation from the initial homogeneous tetrahydrofuran solution of all components led to a disordered but cocontinuous structure in the resulting cross-linked plastics. After polylactide removal, the nanoporous (ca. 20 nm pores) membranes exhibited excellent thermal stability and mechanical toughness, high specific surface areas, narrow pore size distributions, and good permeability. New oxygen chelated ruthenium carbene complex containing carbonyl oxygen and ether oxygen has been developed. The X-ray structure of the complex showed that the carbonyl oxygen of the amide and the terminal oxygen of the benzylidene ether are both coordinated to the metal to give an octahedral structure. The catalytic activities of this new complex for olefin metathesis reactions were investigated and it exhibited excellent performances for the ring-closing metathesis (RCM) of diethyl diallymalonate at 30 C and even at 0 C. The initiation rate of the catalyst was higher than that for the Hoveyda catalyst ((H2IMes)(Cl)2Ru = C(H)(C6H 4-2-OiPr)) and it was also active for cross metathesis (CM).

A series of arene ruthenium(ii) complexes coordinated by phenanthroimidazole derivatives have been synthesized and evaluated for their in vitro anticancer activities. It has been found that these types of arene Ru(ii) complexes, especially [(C6H6)Ru(o-ClPIP)Cl] Cl·2H2O (2a), exhibited acceptable antiproliferative activity against several human cancer cell lines but with low toxicity towards normal HK-2 human cells. Mechanistic studies revealed that 2a-induced growth inhibition against osteosarcoma MG-63 cells was mainly caused by S-phase cell cycle arrest, which was confirmed by the down-regulation of cyclin A and CDK2 using western blot analysis of protein levels. Furthermore, studies using comet assay at single cell level indicated that 2a triggered DNA damage in MG-63 cells, and subsequently initiated S-phase arrest, as shown by the up-regulation of phosphorylated p53 and histone. Moreover, exposure of MG-63 cells to 2a resulted in the down-regulation of c-Myc protein expression. The in vitro DNA-binding behaviors also indicated that 2a could stabilize c-Myc G-quadruplex DNA (G4-DNA) by affecting its conformation. In conclusion, these results suggest that arene Ru(ii) complexes coordinated by phenanthroimidazole derivatives serve as c-Myc G4-DNA stabilizers that could induce S-phase arrest in cancer cells by triggering DNA damage, which suggest that these complexes may act as potential candidates for the treatment of human malignant osteosarcoma. The reaction proceeds at room temperature from terminal alkynes and provides a variety of chloroalkenes. Only the regioisomer resulting from the formal Markovnikov addition is selectively formed. Mechanistic studies show the stereoselective syn addition of HCl to alkynes at room temperature and suggest a chloro hydrido RuIV species as a key intermediate of the reaction.

Reaction of [RuC6H6Cl2]2 with TeO2 and Na2WO4·2H2O in aqueous solution (pH 4.7) yielded a novel organo-ruthenium supported tungstotellurate polyanion, [Te2W20O70(RuC6H6)2]8- (Ru-1), which is composed of two [RuC6H6]2+ units linked to a [Te2W20O70]12- fragment through Ru-O(W) bonds resulting in an assembly with idealized C2h symmetry. Furthermore, the polyanion Ru-1 was anchored on 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (apts)-modified SBA-15 to prepare new catalysts (SBA-15-apts-Ru-1) containing different amounts of Ru-1, which were characterized using powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), N2-adsorption measurement and Fourier transform infrared reflectance (FT-IR) spectroscopy. Finally, the catalytic activity of SBA-15-apts-Ru-1 was evaluated for the aerobic oxidation of n-tetradecane using air as the oxidant in the absence of any additives or solvents. In addition, the optimum catalytic reaction conditions were also determined.
