Cyclopentadienyl RuII Complexes as Highly Efficient Catalysts for the N-Methylation of Alkylamines by Methanol

The ruthenium(II) half-sandwich complex [RuCl(eta5-C5H5)(PPh3)2] (1) catalyses the reaction between methanol and alkylamines RNH2 or R1R2NH to afford RN(CH3)2 and R1R2NCH3 products, respectively. The reaction is quantitative and generally fast, at the methanol reflux temperature, for a wide spectrum of substrates. Starting form primary amines, the stepwise formation of RN=CH2, RNHCH3, and RN(CH3)2 has been observed. Both PPh3 and Cl- dissociation from 1 are key-steps in forming the effective catalytic species. The catalytic activity of several half-sandwich neutral or cationic complexes (2-15) related to 1 is also discussed.

Ruthenium arene complexes with triphenylphosphane ligands: Cytotoxicity towards pancreatic cancer cells, interaction with model proteins, and effect of ethacrynic acid substitution

The ruthenium-arene complexes [(eta6-p-cymene)RuCl2(kappaP-PPh2(4-C6H4CO2H))], 1, [(eta6-p-cymene)RuCl(kappa2P,O-PPh2(2-C6H4CO2))], 2, [(eta6-p-cymene)RuCl2(kappaP-PPh2(2-C6H4OCO-EA))], 3, and [(eta6-p-cymene)RuCl2(kappaP-PPh2(4-C6H4CO2CH2CH2OCO-EA))], 4 (EA-CO2H = ethacrynic acid), were synthesized in good to high yields and characterized by analytical techniques, IR, UV-Vis and multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, and single crystal X-ray diffraction in the cases of 1 and 2. The unstable compounds [(eta6-arene)RuCl2(kappaP-PPh2(2-C6H4CO2CH2CH2OCO-EA))] (arene = p-cymene, 5a; arene = C6H6, 5b) were obtained and identified in solution by NMR. Electrochemical and spectro-electrochemical experiments were performed in order to assess the redox behaviour of 1-4 in CH2Cl2. The in vitro cytotoxicity of 1-4 was determined on the human pancreatic cancer cell line BxPC3 and the mouse embryo fibroblast Balb/3T3 Clone A31 cell line, the latter acting as a model for normal cells. Furthermore, the interaction of 1, 3 and 4 with two model proteins was investigated by high resolution ESI-MS.

New Synthetic Approach for Optically Active Polymer Bearing Chiral Cyclic Architecture: Combination of Asymmetric Allylic Amidation and Ring-Closing Metathesis Reaction

A new synthetic approach for optically active polymer-bearing chiral cyclic architecture is described. The polymer is prepared by a combination of asymmetric allylic amidation catalyzed by planar-chiral ruthenium (Cp?Ru) complexes and ring-closing metathesis (RCM) reaction. We have designed bifunctional monomers bearing allylic chloride and N-alkoxyamide possessing an olefinic moiety, and the resulting polymer provides two olefinic moieties for RCM reactions in each monomer unit. These monomers are smoothly polymerized by Cp?Ru catalyst with quantitative conversion to afford the desired optically active polymer with high regio- and enantioselectivities. The resulting polymer is easily converted to one chiral cyclic structure (3,6-dihydro-2H-oxazine) per monomer unit via RCM catalyzed by the second-generation Hoveyda-Grubbs catalyst. Additionally, the polymerization system is applicable to various monomers, which afford optically active polymers possessing several types of main chain and side chain structures.

Efficient solar water splitting, exemplified by RuO2-catalyzed AlGaAs/Si photoelectrolysis

Contemporary models are shown to significantly underestimate the attainable efficiency of solar energy conversion to water splitting, and experimentally a cell containing illuminated AlGaAs/Si RuO2/Ptblack is demonstrated to evolve H2 and O2 at record solar driven water electrolysis efficiency. Under illumination, bipolar configured Al0.15Ga0.85As (Eg = 1.6 eV) and Si (Eg = 1.1 eV) semiconductors generate open circuit and maximum power photopotentials of 1.30 and 1.57 V, well suited to the water electrolysis thermodynamic potential: H2O?H2+ 1/2 O2; EH(2)O = EO(2)-EH(2); EH(2)O(25 C) = 1.229 V. The EH(2)O/photopotential matched semiconductors are combined with effective water electrolysis O2 or H2 electrocatalysts, RuO2 or Ptblack. The resultant solar photoelectrolysis cell drives sustained water splitting at 18.3% conversion efficiencies. Alternate dual band gap systems are calculated to be capable of attaining over 30% solar photoelectrolysis conversion efficiency.
