Activated pyridinium-tagged ruthenium complexes as efficient catalysts for ring-closing metathesis

New pyridinium-tagged ruthenium catalysts have been synthesised to perform olefin metathesis in several media including both organic and aqueous solvents and room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs). High activity was obtained in the ring-closing metathesis (RCM) of a variety of di- or tri-substituted and/or oxygen-containing dienes. The stereoselective synthesis of the non-lactonic part of the natural G2 checkpoint inhibitor, (Z)-cryptofolione, has been accomplished. Butane-1,4-diol was used as the starting material, and the stereogenic centers were generated through L-proline-catalyzed alpha-aminoxylation and Maruoka asymmetric allylation. Phenanthroline-appended porphyrazines: Synthesis and conversion into solitaire Ru(II) complexes

Unsymmetrical porphyrazines (tetraazaporphyrins) bearing a single bidentate phenanthroline chelating group M[pz(t-butylphenyl)6phen] have been prepared by the base-catalyzed cross condensation of 3,4-bis(4-tert-butylphenyl)pyrroline-2,5-diimine (in excess) with 6,7-dicyanodipyridoquinoxaline. Treatment of these centrally metalated (M = Mg, Zn) ligands with various Ru(II) salts has yielded several bimetallic complexes including the first coordinatively linked porphyrazine trimer. The optical properties of these complexes are shown to be a function of the additional ligands surrounding the asymmetric ruthenium center.

First Detection of a Ruthenium?Carbene?Resorc[4]arene Complex During the Progress of a Metathesis Reaction

For the first time we describe the detection of a ruthenium-carbene-resorc[4]arene complex produced, as a key intermediate, during an olefin metathesis reaction carried out on a resorc[4]arene bicyclic olefin with [Ru(=CHPh)Cl2(PCy3)2] Grubbs first-generation (G1ST) catalyst. The complex was identified by using high-resolution (600 MHz) 1H, 31P NMR and DOSY spectroscopy, in a non-invasive fashion. The singlet at delta = 19.98 ppm (1H NMR), attributed to the alkylidene proton in the G1ST catalyst and that at delta = 53.37 ppm (31P NMR), attributed to the phosphorus atom coordinated with the metal, were selected as probes for a kinetic analysis. The intensity of these signals decreased at the expense of the singlets at 19.26 (1H NMR) and 52.68 ppm (31P NMR), diagnostic for the formation of the ruthenium-carbene-resorc[4]arene complex 3a[Ru]. The resorc[4]arene activated olefin proved to behave as a key propagating species leading to oligomers according to a ROMP pathway.

A preliminary investigation on the use of organic ionic liquids as green solvents for acylation and oxidation reactions

Different organic ionic liquids (OILs) have been used as green solvents in Friedel-Crafts acylation and alcohol oxidation reactions. Specifically, three OILs were employed, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride, tetraethylammonium bromide, and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride, and four reactions studied, acylation of toluene by acetyl chloride, acylation of benzene by propionyl chloride, oxidation of benzyl alcohol by N-methylmorpholine N-oxide, and oxidation of salicylic alcohol by o-iodoxybenzoic acid. The reactions were carried out, at room temperature, in a well-stirred lab-scale glass batch reactor, under inert atmosphere and for reaction times ranging from 5 to 90 min. Gas chromatography was employed to characterize the reaction products. First of all, the desired products yield as a function of the reaction time was investigated. Moreover, simple kinetic models were built for the interpretation of the experimental results. Additional tests were carried out to assess the possibility of recycling the OILs employed. The results of this preliminary study were satisfactory as the OILs investigated proved to be good media in which to carry out the reactions studied in this work (desired products yield greater than 90% were achieved). Moreover, the reaction rate expressions of the kinetic models were able to satisfactorily predict the experimental results. Finally, the possibility of recycling the OIL (in one of the reactions) was proved to be feasible and this suggests the use of recycled OIL together with a fresh make-up, to match high yield values with economical/ecological advantages.
