To a 40 mL scintillation vial equipped with a magnetic stir bar were added C848 (0.500 g, 0.589 mmol),^-toluenesulfonyl chloride (0.056 g, 0.30 mmol), dimethyl sulfoxide (0.230 g, 2.94 mmol), and dichloromethane (4 mL). The reaction was stirred at ambient temperature for one hour then filtered through a plug of celite and combined with diethyl ether (30 mL). The resulting purple precipitate was isolated by filtration, washed with diethyl ether (2 x 10 mL) then dried in vacuum to afford C647m as a purple crystalline solid (0.269 g, 70.7% yield). The X-ray structure of C647m is shown in Figure 2.
